What if I am getting a PET/CT scan?

THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PET/CT EXAM

1. 12 hours before your exam, follow a Low Carbohydrate Diet.

  • Low-carb options: un-breaded meats, fish, vegetables, eggs, and nuts
    • No cough drops, gum or mints
    • No sweets, soda, desserts
    • No breads, cereals, pastas, potatoes, rice, or dairy

2. 24 hours before your exam, No Strenuous Exercise.


THE DAY OF YOUR PET/CT EXAM

  • Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for registration and exam prep.
  • DO NOT EAT 5 hours prior to exam. You may drink as much water as you like.
  • You may take your medications as prescribed with ONLY WATER.
  • Please allow approximately 2 hours for your PET/CT appointment:
    • Minimum 45 MINUTE WAIT TIME for PET medicine to absorb into your body.
    • Scanning time is 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Please bring your own water to drink.
  • Wear sweats. Do not wear metal, jeans, belts, or jewelry.
  • Ensure all shirt and pant pockets are empty


For Diabetic Patients
 

Please tell the Imaging Department if you are diabetic.

Diabetic Patients:

  • IF YOU HAVE AN INSULIN PUMP, LEAVE ON NORMAL BASAL SETTING (NO EXTRA INJECTIONS) 4 HOURS PRIOR TO TEST
  • NO diabetic INSULIN shots 4hrs before your appointment.
  • Take ORAL diabetic medications with WATER as prescribed.
  • Acceptable Blood sugar range: 60 – 200

IMAGING STAFF WILL CALL THE DAY BEFORE EXAM TO CONFIRM PREPARATION.
