CCSI’s nursing staff includes Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).
LPNs work closely with the physicians during patient visits. They assess vital signs (ex., temperature, blood pressure), oxygen saturation, and blood sugar levels. They assist the physician as needed during exams and special procedures, including but not limited to bone marrow biopsies and fine needle aspirations. The nursing staff also monitor patient phone calls, including requests for prescription refills, and follow through on physician orders as directed.
RNs are specially trained as oncology nurses. They administer chemotherapy drugs and other medications as ordered by the physician, usually through infusion therapy or injections. They maintain central venous access devices, draw blood samples from central lines, and provide routine maintenance care as needed. RNs educate patients and their families about medications, nutrition, and possible side effects of various treatments. They monitor patient progress throughout treatments and alert the physician of any changes in the patient’s condition.
