What is a CT (or CAT) Scan?

  • CT stands for Computed Tomography (or Computed Axial Tomography)
  • CT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images/pictures or “slices” of the inside of the body.
  • CT scans of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.

What can I expect the day of the exam?

  • Technologist will ask questions about your health history.
  • If your scan is with contrast the technologist will start an IV or your port will need to be accessed.
  • You will be asked to lay flat on your back on the imaging table and usually, if you are able, your arms are positioned over your head.
  • The bed will move in and out of the CT gantry or “tunnel” several times.
  • Exam is usually complete in 5-15 minutes.
